The recent and ongoing exploration for limestone in residentially
zoned areas
by RMC Lonestar has alerted the people of Bonny Doon to the danger
that the
present limestone quarry could expand into those residential areas,
bringing
those effects closer to more homes and people.
Therefore the undersigned do hereby petition the Board of Supervisors
to
assure them that:
1. Absolutely no expansion of existing quarry areas and the mineral
extraction zone will ever be permitted.
2. The hills and vegetation which now protect Bonny Doon from current
quarrying operations be left as they are, untouched.
One look at a topographic map
shows how essential the three hills south of
Smith Grade are to defend the
peace of a huge area.
3. RMC Lonestar's current application to expand its quarry within
the
currently zoned quarrying area be permitted only
with the assurance that
environmental safeguards will be strictly adhered
to; that wildlife be
protected, particularly endangered or threatened
species; and that ground and
surface water that Bonny Doon and City of Santa
Cruz residents depend on will
not be affected.
4. Quarry and cement plant activities be required to adhere strictly
to
permitted conditions, including time of operation,
noise levels, setbacks,
equipment, use of explosives, dust control, environmental
impact, site
restoration, and to refrain from initiating operations
for which permission
has not been obtained. We urge you to ask County
personnel for increased
vigilance and to instigate and apply serious
punishment for infractions.
